After the shot advice: Bobcat
« on: October 25, 2012, 07:44:47 PM »
So out deer hunting today on the west side a nice bobcat stood still a little too long. So I got my first cat, real nice one pictures to follow. Problem is I'm new to cats  and such, not sure what to do next. I would like to make a head on rug since it is my first. Never mind I shot it with a 7mm mag. at about 25 yards. It has a couple holes but that adds to the story. So I know I have to have the pelt sealed but should I freeze it till I can get it taken care of or what. Had bobcat sausage when I was younger and don't think that is an option. Any advice greatly appreciated, want to do right by this awesome animal. Thanks.

Or take it straight to the taxi now. He/she will gladly skin it and everything for you with little added cost.

I think he will need to have WDFW seal it before a taxidermist can/will take it.  Was that way with my 2 cats.  I just took the cats still in the boxs I froze them in to the regional office, then on to the taxidermist.  But that was awhile ago.

You could have game warden meet you at the taxidermist. :twocents:

Good luck with that..
Freeze it ( i do with mine), then call your WDFW offfice as they set up times to come in and get it sealed, then drop it off at the taxi.
I understand they say not to freeze in the regs but they dont go out of there way to meet you, heck they barely show up if you call about a violation..
They will tell you to freeze if you cant get right in.

True, they do say that, but I called the regional office to make sure when I came down there would be someone there that could do it and if they had to be thawed.  They said for bobcats it didn't matter it was frozen, cougar they didn't want frozen though, maybe call the regional office close to you and ask/arrange a time to swing by if its not too far out of they way.

Skin his upper lip either to his nostril or eye socket, then run a small piece of rope through it. Then get it in the freezer asap. The incision allows a warden a place to put the seal without poking a couple holes in the hide while it's frozen. Cats need to be skinned right away or froze quickly, as they will slip. You don't want that.
